After these are reckoned the Archbishop of Canturburies courts: to wit, The Court of the Arches: wherein sitteth as Iudge the Deane of the Arches. He is called Deane, for that he hath jurisdiction in xiij. Parishes of London, exempt from the Bishop of London, which number maketh a Deanerie; and Deane of the Arches, because the principall of his Churches, S. Maries church in London, the tower, steeple or lantern whereof is beautifully built of archèd worke. He hath to do with appeales of all men within the Province of Canturburie. Advocates there be in this Court xvj. or more, at the pleasure of the Archbishop, all Doctours of the Law; two Registers, and ten Proctours. (p. 181)
